Vice President General Lawrence Fehrenbaker Message

12 July 2016

It is with humility and honor, that I have been elected as the South Atlantic District Vice Presodent General for the 2016-2017 term. I sincerely thank all for this opportunity. The legacy of the South Atlantic District Vice President General's office has been initiated by our past VPGs, each of whom have imprinted upon the tradition of this office. I shall endeavor to maintain the bar of commitment to our District that has been set in the past.
As stated in our by-laws, the charge to our District is "to promote growth in our states' membership and interest in the objects of our society which are declared to be patriotic, historical, and educational, and shall include those intended or designed to perpetuate the memory of those patriots who, by their services or sacrifices during the war of the American Revolution, achieved the independence of the American people; to unite and promote fellowship among their descendants; to inspire them and the community-at-large with a more profound reverence for the principles of the government founded by our forefathers; to encourage historical research in relation to the American Revolution; to acquire and preserve the records of the individual services of the patriots of the war, as well as documents, rellics, and landmarks; to mark the scenes of the Revolution by appropriate memorials; to celebrate the anniversaries of the prominent events of the war and of the Revolutionary period; to foster true patriotism; to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom and to carry out the purposes expressed in the preamble of the Constitution of our country and the injunctions of Washington in his farewell address to the American people." These tenets of our stated mission must be repeatedly stated, least we become subjugated in pursuing other self-serving goals.
As your VPG, I shall be available to any State society, chapter or individual who seeks my assistance. As the Florida Society's President last term, I emphasized a "return to basics," and I will suggest that we as a District consider a "return to basics," in Chapter development and support, including member recruitment, retention and chapter officer training at the State level. Chapters that demonstrate lack of growth, or interest in promoting our national programs, must be critiqued by State leadership, before these chapters cease to exist.
The success of any VPG is reflective of those with whom he works for the betterment of the goals of our organization. When needed I will not hesitate to seek the council of my predecessors and presidents of our District States. I have asked Compatriot Ed Rigel, Jr., to continue serving as the District Secretary, which he has so ably done this past term and I have asked Compatriot Chuck Sweeney to continue as our webmaster. After the conclusion of the 126th Congress, Compatriot Sweeney will continue updating the District's Calendar with the events for the remainder of 2016 and continue into 2017, as well as listing my visitation schedule. I have already made plans to attend the District State's Annual Meetings that have been posted, in addition to each State's major Commemorative Event. Other State visits will be scheduled to co-ordinate with the President General's visits to the South Atlantic District. My wife, Jeanne and I enjoyed visiting and attending District events this past year and are committed to attending as many District events as possible. Vice President General Rigel and his Lady Joan have demonstrated a level of commitment in attending District functions during the past year, that will be difficult to equal and we sincerely thank them for their dedication to the South Atlantic District this past year.
Gentlemen, working together this term, we can continue the tradition of the South Atlantic District being the largest, most dedicated District in promoting the mission of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Thank you for your commitment to the South Atlantic District, and I look forward to working with you this term.
God Bless the United States of America.
